#4 The Muskegon Airport

It is hard to imagine a better airport than Muskegon’s. I know that parking garages save our green spaces from being consumed by acres upon acres of cracked and crumbling asphalt parking lots. But our airport happens to be small enough to make the idea of a parking garage seem silly at this point. Therefore, I am giving a big thumb’s up to the surface level parking that is a stone’s throw from the front door of the terminal. You can’t beat it for convenience even on days when it is snowing because apparently the staff at the airport have a habit of cleaning off cars just before flights get in. Do they do this every day before every flight? I don’t know. The fact that they do it and it’s well known enough to get in the paper, which is how I know about it, is unbelievable to me. With that kind of thoughtfulness and service I’m amazed that people from Grand Rapids aren’t driving over here to catch a flight. All these accolades and we aren’t even in the door yet.

Okay so if you’ve ever stood in a line with 500 other travelers all waiting to get checked through the same 2 foot wide gate by the lone 90 year old dude who is comparing photo i.d. to face to itinerary all while your flight sign flashes “Boarding” you will understand what I’m saying when I whisper the words, “No lines.” The new United jets to Chicago only hold, what, 50? If everyone on the flight arrived within 15 minutes of each other, the wait to check baggage and get through the checkpoint would still be so small as to be not worth mentioning. But who would come on time to the airport when you could get there a little early and eat at the Brownstone? Surely their steak sandwich with the bleu cheese crumbles and the onions sautéed to a sweet-crunchy perfection is as good as any made anywhere in the country. At the very least, it’s good enough for someone getting on a plane to Chicago, okay?  As a matter of fact, I go to the airport just to eat because I’m usually not flying anywhere these days.

Let’s see, easy access, treated like a human being, minimal waiting in lines, good food and an hour or so to Chicago and from there, anywhere in the world. And usually it is competitively priced. I really don’t know what else someone could want in a hometown airport. Definitely one of the Top 10 Best Things About Living in Muskegon.

The fare to Israel was cheaper from Muskegon than it was from Chicago.  One more reason I love to support our local airport!  AA

Express Transportation was reasonable priced and we were totally satisfied.  RG

It was a rainy day after church, and so we drove out to the Muskegon Airport where this restaurant is located.  The location is nothing fancy, it almost looks like an average deli, with the exception that the large windows face the landing strip.  So if you are there at the right time, you can watch the planes land and take off.

As for the food, the menu looked pretty good.  It wasn't average fare, there was a pretty good selection of entrees, salads, sandwiches and appetizers to try.  But since it was a cold rainy day, we just tried the soups.

I had the chili and my aunt had the special, called Feather Fowlie.  Both choices were very good.  The seasonings were perfect with good flavors.  The chili was very hearty with chunks of beef, bell peppers, tomatoes and big red beans.  The Feather Fowlie reminded me of a chicken pot pie flavor.  A very creamy soup with large pieces of carrots, and chicken and other veggies.  I had a taste and almost wished I had ordered that instead.  Not because my chili wasn't good, just because I was feeling greedy and wanted it all.

It is a very laid back place, the employees were friendly and helpful.  The food was brought out quickly and the prices were reasonable.

I would definitely recommend trying the Brownstone if in the area and you want to try something different.   YB

Letter received Oct 09

Although this letter is long overdue, it in no way minimizes my wife's and my appreciation for Kimberly's above and beyond service afforded us on our yearly trip to Muskegon this past July.

Each year we fly into Muskegon and then drive to my sister's lake home just outside of Pentwater.  This year only my baggage arrived and it was only after many, many phone calls to Northwest was it ascertained that my wife's luggage had been sent back to Gainesville, FL, the origination of our flight.  We STILL have no idea how that happened since she was on the flight with me.  Be that as it may, Kimberly was MOST HELPFUL and exhibited an attitude that, unfortunately, is not the norm anymore.  She stayed in contact with us and even gave us her personal cell phone number to make sure that she could be reached.

Her concern for our predicament was genuine and certainly went a long way in helping to resolve the situation.  We thanked her over and over and I said I would be glad to write a letter to hopefully be included in her file.  We hope to see her again next year, but not with a problem to solve.

Letter: Muskegon airport provides vital service for area businesspeople

From MLive.com

Thank you for your As We See It editorial in the Aug. 9 Chronicle called "Fight for Flight." As a person who is self-employed and travels quite a lot, I use our Muskegon County Airport several times per month. It is wonderful to have such an award-winning and convenient airport nearby. The airport staff are friendly, helpful and positive, unlike those I often encounter in Detroit, Chicago, New York City, or San Francisco.

I would urge the airport advisory committee to do all in its power to keep Delta/Mesaba here and ALL Muskegon area residents to support the continuation of this vital service!
